FRONT PAGE AWARDS 2013 – CATEGORIES

ONLINE (These entries must have appeared exclusively online)

1.      Spot News

Deadline reporting of a single event. Entries must have been published the day of the event. Entries must be a single article, but may include sidebars.

 2.      In-Depth Reporting

In-depth coverage of an important topic that had or could have significant impact. Entries may be a single article or a series of no more than FIVE (5) articles on a single subject and may include sidebars.

 3.      Feature

Trend, profile, human-interest or other subject area that is not breaking news. Entries may be a single article and may include sidebars.

 4.      Digital Video

Visual and audio coverage of a news event or feature created specifically for the Internet.

 5.      Multimedia News Package

A cohesive package of words, photographs, graphics, audio and/or video that enhances understanding of a single subject in a Web-only publication or in the Internet version of a traditional news outlet. A URL may be submitted for this category only. Entrants must be certain the link is NOT password protected or otherwise inaccessible.

 6.      Blogs

Entries must be original, focused on a single subject, and limited to a maximum of FIVE (5) posts.

WIRES

7.      Spot News

Deadline reporting of a single event in a single day. Entries must be a single article, but may include sidebars.

8.      In-Depth Reporting

Entry should demonstrate entrant’s ability to provide treatment of an issue that has not received prior coverage or would not have been told without the reporter’s diligence in uncovering or reporting the subject. Submit a maximum of FIVE (5) articles showing the development of the story. All entries must have been published between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012.

9.      Beat Reporting

Coverage by a single reporter or a team of reporters of a particular subject. Submit a maximum of FIVE (5) articles.

10.  Feature

Trend, profile, human-interest or other subject area that is not breaking news. Entries may be a single article and may include sidebars.

NEWSPAPERS  (Circulation — More than 100,000)

11.   Spot News

Deadline reporting of a single event. Entries must have been published no later than the day after the event. Entries must be a single article, but may include sidebars.

12.   In-Depth Reporting

Submission should demonstrate entrant’s ability to provide treatment of an issue that has not received prior coverage or would not have been told without the reporter’s diligence in uncovering or reporting the subject. Submit a maximum of FIVE (5) articles representing the development of the story. The entries must have been published within the contest year.

13.   Beat Reporting

Coverage by a single reporter or up to a team of three reporters of a particular subject covered during the contest year. Submit a maximum of FIVE (5) articles.

14.   Feature

Trend, profile, human-interest or a subject area that is not breaking news. Entries may be a single article and may include sidebars.

15.  The Nellie Bly Award – Best Bylined Front Page Story (Open to all newspapers)

Entries must have appeared in at least one hard copy issue of the newspaper. Must be a single article.

NEWSPAPERS (Circulation — less than 100,000)

16.  Local News Reporting 

Coverage that has great impact on readership. Entries may include a single article or a series of up to FIVE (5) related articles, and may include sidebars.

17.  Beat Reporting

Coverage by a single reporter or up to a team of three reporters of a particular subject covered during the contest year. Submit a maximum of FIVE (5) articles.

18.  In-Depth Reporting

Submission should demonstrate entrant’s ability to provide treatment of an issue that has not received prior coverage or would not have been told without the reporter’s diligence in uncovering or reporting the subject. PHOTOGRAPHY

20.   Best Front Page Photo

The photo must capture a single event, and be published the day of the event, or the day after. The photo must carry an individual credit or be accompanied by an editor’s letter specifying credit.

21.   Breaking News

Photo of a breaking news story, accurately capturing the event and displaying visual impact. Entries are limited to a single photo.

22.   Feature

Photo exhibiting human interest, profile, or photograph related to a subject that is not a breaking news story.

23.   Photo Essay

A series of published photographs on a single subject.

24.   Sports

Photo capturing the spirit of a single sports moment, either in professional or amateur athletics.

RADIO (Radio entries must be identical to the broadcast version)

25.  Breaking News (news, features, sports)

On-the-scene coverage of a single event aired the same day.

26.  Feature

Trend stories, profiles, humor, human-interest stories or any other type of feature. Entries should be a single broadcast or no more than a 3-part series on a single topic.

27.  In-Depth Reporting

Submission should demonstrate entrant’s ability to provide treatment of an issue that has not received prior coverage or would not have been told without the reporter’s diligence in uncovering or reporting the subject. Submit a maximum of FIVE (5) articles representing the development of the story. The entries must have been published within the contest year.

TELEVISION

28.  Breaking News

On-the-scene spot coverage of a single event broadcast the same day.

Narratives or voice-overs are allowed only if they were part of the original broadcast.

29.  Special Programming (public affairs or editorial)

Entry may be a single report or editorial, or may be a series of up to THREE (3) reports on the same subject. Narratives or voice-overs are allowed only if they were part of the original broadcast.

30.  Special Reporting Series (Investigative or Enterprise Reporting)

Submit coverage of a single subject reported in TWO (2) or more parts. Narratives or voice-overs are allowed only if they were part of the original broadcast.

31.  Feature

Trend stories, profiles, humor, human-interest stories or any other subject that is not a breaking news story.

32.  Interview

An interview with a key personality in politics, education, entertainment, sports or other area.

33.  Documentary

Including but not limited to an event, era, life story that contains no fictional elements. Entries must be limited to a single piece.

MAGAZINES

34.  News

Coverage of a news event, published in the issue immediately following the event.

35.  Features

Trend, profile, human-interest or any other type of feature that is not a breaking news story. Entries may be a single article or a series of up to FIVE (5) articles, including sidebars.

36.  In-Depth Reporting

Story should demonstrate entrant’s ability to provide treatment of an issue that has an impact on the publication’s readership but that has not received prior coverage or would not have been told without the reporter’s diligence in uncovering or reporting of the subject. Submit a maximum of THREE (3) articles representing the development of the story. The dates for each article must fall within the contest calendar year.

37.  Essay

A short literary composition, generally on a single subject, reflecting the author’s opinion . Entries must be limited to a single article.

Specialized Reporting

(Open to Newspapers, Online, Wires, Radio, TV and Magazines)

38.  Fashion

Coverage of an event, feature, profile or business story related to the fashion industry. Entries may be a single article or up to three related articles, and may include sidebars.

39.  Sports

Coverage of an event, feature, profile or business story related to organized sports. Entries may be a single article or up to three related articles, and may include sidebars.

40.  Opinion/Criticism

Regular column, guest Op-Ed or review on any topic. Entries may be a single article or up to THREE (3) articles.

41.  Editorial Writing

Editorials without bylines must be accompanied by a letter from the editor attesting to the entrant’s work. Entries are limited to THREE (3) articles.

42.  Science

Breaking news, feature, analysis or investigation about scientific discovery, application or situation. Entries may be a single article or up to THREE (3) related articles and may include sidebars.

43.  Medicine/Health/Fitness

Breaking news, feature, analysis or investigation about medical advances, health, or fitness. Entries may be a single article or up to THREE (3) related articles, and may include sidebars.

44.  Business

Coverage of an event, feature or profile related to the business community. Entries may be a single article or up to THREE (3) related articles, and may include sidebars.

45.  Editorial Cartoons

Entries must reflect a unique take on the news. Entries limited to ONE (1) cartoon.

Martha Coman Award for Best New Journalist

(Open to all categories)

(Martha Coman was one of the first women reporters for the New York Herald and a founding member of The Newspaper Women’s Club, which became the Newswomen’s Club of New York. She was the Club’s first president)

Best journalistic effort by a newswoman with three years or less professional experience. This award is for newcomers to the profession, NOT newcomers to the New York metropolitan area. A letter from a supervisor attesting to the entrant’s tenure must be submitted. Up to THREE published pieces by the entrant will be judged.

Marie Colvin Award for Foreign Correspondence

(Open to all categories)

Best coverage of an event or ongoing story outside the United States by a New York City-based newswoman. This award memorializes the work of our colleague and friend Marie Colvin, who was killed in a rocket attack on February 22, 2012 while covering the siege of Homs in Syria for The Sunday Times.
