Newswomen’s Club of New York Announces 2023 Front Page Award Winners

The Front Page Awards, presented since 1937 by the Newswomen’s Club of New York, recognizes journalistic excellence among women.

In a year where news developed at a breakneck speed, New York City's newswomen strove to highlight the human stories behind the headlines. They succeeded in doing so, sharing the stories of the people affected by war, migration crises, gun violence and climate change. Newswomen investigated the consequences of cuts and consolidations to the city's healthcare systems, exposed the cracks New York's school children are falling through and continued the ongoing fight against misinformation.

Our winning women stopped at nothing to get to the truth of matters both big and small, knowing that to those affected by matters that some would consider the latter, it’s anything but.

The 86th annual Front Page Awards pay tribute to these exceptional newswomen at local, regional and national outlets across the New York metropolitan area.

The Front Page Awards will be presented at the New York Athletic Club on Feb. 6, 2024. Those wishing to attend, can purchase tickets to the event: here. Those interested in purchasing a table of tickets - as well as sponsorship opportunities - should contact Sasha Padbidri at newswomen@newswomensclubnewyork.com. Connect with Newswomen’s Club of New York on X at @NYNewswomen, Instagram at @nynewswomenclub and with our LinkedIn Group to find out more about this year’s winners and their work.

The Front Page Award for Journalist of the Year goes to Gwynne Hogan of The City for her exemplary coverage of the migrant crisis in New York City. She broke news about the locations of new shelters, exposed the conditions inside of them, including instances of sexual harassment, and revealed multiple instances of mismanagement, waste and abuse of authority.

The Marie Colvin Award for Foreign Correspondence goes to Carlotta Gall of The New York Times. Her expert and courageous coverage of the war in Ukraine documented the struggle to identify the dead in Russian-occupied Bucha put a human face on the conflict by profiling the lives of three women who were victims of atrocities, and exposed alleged war crimes at a civilian detention center.

The Ida B. Wells Award Honoring Exceptional Coverage of Communities of Color will go to S. Mitra Kalita, a columnist for Time/Charter, for her insightful and accessible weekly columns on the future of work. Kalita’s work provided timely, concrete examples of how workplaces might do better in regard to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Martha Coman Front Page Award for Best New Journalist will go to Jennah Haque, data visualization reporter for Bloomberg News. Her work covered the FIFA Women’s World Cup TV rights dispute, pay equity for WNBA players, and the devotion of Taylor Swift’s far-traveling fans.

The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Michelle V. Agins, a 34-year staff photographer for The New York Times, who has not only amassed a significant body of work but, as a pioneering Black woman photojournalist, has nurtured and encouraged a generation of photojournalists.

When Agins began her tenure at The Times in 1989, she was the newsroom’s second Black female photographer. Prior to that, she had been a staff photographer for The Charlotte Observer since 1987. Agins faced many challenges while creating her own path in the industry, and those experiences inspired her to make mentoring other women of color in the field an important focus of her life’s work.

Agins’ photographs have been widely exhibited and recognized by many professional organizations. She is a two-time Pulitzer nominee and was part of The Times team that won the Pulitzer in 2001 for the series “How Race is Lived in America.” Agins has been awarded an honorary degree from Dominican University, from which she graduated. In 2019, she was awarded the National Press Photographers Association’s highest honor, the Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, for her “commitment to the craft of visual journalism and to education that advances the profession.” In 2022, she was inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame and was the Lucie Honoree for Achievement in Photojournalism.
