Heat Wave, Bronx 1993 

Caption: As a heat wave stalled over much of the east coast, residents of the Parkchester Apartments in the Bronx tried to find some relief on a park bench on July 10, 1993.

Bio: Michelle V. Agins is a photojournalist for The New York Times, based in New York City. She was hired by The Times in 1989, becoming the newspaper’s second Black female staff photographer. Before that, she worked at the Charlotte Observer. She was also the personal photographer for Harold Washington, the first Black mayor of Chicago. She graduated from Rosary College, now Dominican University, where in 2019, she was presented with an honorary doctoral degree. Also that year, she received the Joseph Spragg Memorial Award from the National Press Photographers Association. In 2021, She was inducted into the Black Journalists Hall of Fame by the National Association of Black Journalists, and in 2023, she received the lifetime achievement award from the Newswomen’s Club of New York.
