Fire Lookout, Desolation Peak, Washington

Caption: The fire lookout on Desolation Peak in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area on July 7, 2018. In the summer of 1956, writer Jack Kerouac spent 63 days there as a fire lookout, later writing about it in his 1965 semi-autobiographical novel “Desolation Angels.” Hozomeen Mountain can be seen in the background, on the right.

Bio: Ruth Fremson is a photojournalist for The New York Times, based in Seattle. She has been a photojournalist for 34 years and has covered a wide range of events, including the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, the 2002 Olympics in Utah, the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the infamous 2022 Oscars ceremony. From 1994 to 2005 she covered conflicts in Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian territories. From 2005 through 2011 she made repeated trips to India, documenting the rapidly changing country. She has also covered national politics, including the presidential campaigns of John McCain, Al Gore and Hillary Clinton. Ruth was based in Jerusalem for The Associated Press before joining The Times in 2000. She was born and raised in New York City but has lived around the world, including London, Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, N.C. Ruth’s work has been recognized with many awards, including three Pulitzer Prizes.
