Nutcracker Audition

Bio: Sara Krulwich is the theater photographer for The New York Times, photographing stage productions in New York City. Every year, she documents more than 100 staged productions, as well as dozens of news and feature stories, in addition to photographing new productions at the Metropolitan Opera. Sara was raised in New York and attended the University of Michigan, where she was the first woman staff photographer for the school newspaper, The Michigan Daily. After graduation, she repeatedly broke new ground, becoming the first female staff photographer at The Providence Journal, The Journal Inquirer and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

She joined The Times in 1979 and covered sports, politics and general assignments until being named the paper’s first culture photographer in 1994. In 2018, she was the first journalist to receive a Tony Honor in recognition of “work that stands as an authentic historical record of New York theater.”
