Q Train to Coney Island

Bio: Syndi is a New York City-based street photographer with an MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts and a successful career as an Emmy award-winning TV editor. While her journey into photography began in college, the onset of the 2020 pandemic re-ignited Syndi’s passion for the craft.
Initially drawn to capturing the eerie stillness of New York's lockdown streets, her lens has since shifted to document the vibrant energy of crowds and gatherings, both within New York City and beyond. Syndi strives to capture glimpses of moments that may otherwise go unnoticed. She is especially drawn to photographing large crowds and gatherings—the more people, the better. Syndi love trying to create some sense of order within the chaos of these crowds. Her frames tend to be packed edge to edge, but there is always something anchoring the image: a gesture, a look, glances between people within the image, or a glance towards the camera. While she predominantly works in black and white, Syndi also enjoys working in color from time to time.
Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including The ICP Concerned show in New York in 2020, The Women Street Photographers annual NYC exhibits in 2020, 2023 and 2025, and various international festival group shows. In 2024, Pilar received third place in LensCulture's Street Photography competition and was also one of forty photographers to be accepted into the Missouri Photo Workshop, focusing its 76th year in Kennett, Missouri.  Additionally, her photographs have been published in several books and online news outlets.
She is a member of the NPPA (National Press Photographers Association) and the NYPPA (New York Press Photographers Association) and carries NY MOME press credentials when needed.
